Beginning Photography Tips

So, you've come for some beginning photography tips? Welcome!

We'll take the mystery out of all the technical terms that scare so many people away from photography. Along the way, you'll gain a basic understanding of the critical elements required to take a high-quality photograph.

Taking an outstanding photograph requires that you understand how light is manipulated by the various elements of a camera.

CameraBasic Photography Concepts

  • Aperture
Opening that controls how much light passes through the lens into the camera.

  • Shutter Speeds
Defines the amount of time light is allowed to pass through the aperture.

  • ISO Film Speeds
Determines the sensitivity to light of the film or digital sensor.

  • Focal Length
Defines the zoom factor of the lens.

  • Depth of Field
Controls how much of the photograph is in focus.

  • Composition
How the elements of the photograph are organized and positioned.

Some of the perceived complexity of photography comes from the number of variables that decide simply if your photograph is "well exposed". That is, not too dark, not too light, but just right!

In our Beginners Photography section, you'll learn how to balance the above components to make each and every photograph you take better.

After understanding these concepts, you'll see immediate improvement!
